NYU – Policing Project
Police-Community Relations
The NYU Policing Project works to ensure public safety practices are democratically accountable, transparent, and equitable. Since 2015, the initiative has worked with all stakeholders across the political spectrum, with local community members, as well as policing agencies, to seek common ground and opportunities for consensus.
Grant Partner Since: 2026
NFL Funding Supports:
- The 12 Million Calls Initiative, which supports programs that dispatch alternative responders – unarmed, non-police responders to a range of 911 calls – from behavioral health, to wellness checks, to traffic incidents, to quality-of-life services.
- Collectively, the goal is to reach the goal of diverting 12 million calls (approx. 5% of the national 911 call volume) by 2030.
- This initiative is intended to support jurisdictions in diverting 911 calls to alternative responders, by identifying diversion-eligible calls, crafting successful policies, practices and implementation strategies, and exposing jurisdictions to a larger community of best practice strategies, toolkits and guides.
