It's going to take more than one preseason game for Aaron Glenn to exorcise all the penalty demons that have plagued the New York Jets.
All offseason, the first-time head coach has harped on changing the culture in New York, which includes playing more disciplined. Saturday night's 30-10 preseason win over the Green Bay Packers was more of the same from the penalty department.
"The only thing that wasn't our brand is the amount of penalties that we had," Glenn said via the New York Post. "Some of those penalties were undisciplined penalties. We've got to clean those up."
The Jets were flagged 12 times, with 10 accepted or not offsetting, totaling 91 yards.
It's preseason, and many players getting reps won't be regulars, but for a coach trying to change culture, the penalties become a talking point.
Glenn has worked to instill a new mentality, with cleaner play a key offseason focus. His frustration with some penalties on Saturday was clear in his sideline interactions.
Case in point, defensive end Micheal Clemons, who struggled with penalties last year, was called for unnecessary roughness following a fight with Packers right tackle Zach Tom. Both players were flagged for offsetting fouls, but Glenn pulled Clemons and had an animated conversation with the fourth-year pro.
"I have to address that," Glenn said of the sideline chat.
Penalties and the like don't matter to the outside world during preseason, but a coach trying to revitalize the culture cares greatly. Glenn will continue to harp on the little things, so Gang Green doesn't continue to rack up the double-digit penalty problems that plagued them a year ago.
