The Kansas City Chiefs announced Tuesday that they had released offensive tackle Jared Gaither, just days after he committed a costly false-start penalty during a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Gaither had entered the game for one down after left tackle Branden Albert was slow to get up. Gaither was called for a false start, pushing the Chiefs back 5 yards, and they eventually had to settle for a field goal. Kansas City wound up losing 13-9.
The 6-foot-9, 340-pound Gaither once was viewed as a cornerstone offensive lineman in Baltimore, where he started five playoff games. But injuries kept him out last season, and he was unable to reclaim the same form from early in his career with Kansas City.
The Chiefs signed offensive tackle David Mims from the practice squad to the 53-man roster to replace Gaither.
