Colts: No Chuck Pagano announcement on Monday

Chuck Pagano's fate with the Indianapolis Colts will need to wait another day.

The team announced that no decision will be made Monday on the job status of their embattled head coach.

Why? Because team owner Jim Irsay was still meeting with Pagano, who was thought by many to be history following a disappointing 8-8 campaign that saw the coach battle behind the scenes with general manager Ryan Grigson.

NFL Media's Rand Getlin reported that Pagano and team brass are still discussing his future as both sides evaluate the possibility of working together and moving forward.

Is Irsay open to keeping his coach around?

The well-documented in-fighting with Grigson soiled this season, but Pagano remains highly respected after piling up an impressive 41-23 mark over four seasons. Could he be working out a new deal after so many Colts players rallied to his side over the past 24 hours? Might Grigson be shown the door? NFL firings typically happen quickly -- a concise conversation and a handshake. Monday's long session is mysterious.

Even Colts players are also left wondering what the future holds, having left the building hours ago:

We'll find out soon enough, but any delay suggests optimism for a coach who many wrote off weeks ago.

UPDATE: The Indianapolis Colts and Chuck Pagano agreed to a four-year contract extension on Monday night.
