Cowboys re-sign Rolando McClain to one-year deal

The Cowboys feel their defense is in a good place when Rolando McClain is playing middle linebacker. They made that clear on Wednesday, re-signing the former top-10 pick to a one-year deal worth $5 million, sources told NFL Media's Ian Rapoport and Rand Getlin.

McClain's agency, SportsTrust Advisors, tweeted the deal Wednesday as well.

The deal is a no-brainer for the Cowboys, who have managed to get more out of McClain than any other team. Despite a suspension to start the 2015 season, he was again one of the better inside linebackers in football over a long season in Dallas.

The length of the contract is a no-risk maneuver that shields Dallas against McClain's turbulent past. A former No. 8 pick, McClain retired from football at 23 after an extremely short stint with the Ravens before finding himself in Dallas. He finished with 50 tackles and two sacks over 11 games last year, as well as an interception returned for a touchdown.

McClain's bullish style keeps a versatile playmaker in the Cowboys' front seven and frees up star linebacker Sean Lee to make more plays on the outside. At the moment, he might be one of the best values in football assuming he can stay on the field.
