Injuries: Trevor Siemian (shoulder) returns to practice

The Cleveland Browns have a problem along their offensive line.

Starting center Cameron Erving left the field on Wednesday with a trainer, dealing with a sprained ankle, Hue Jackson told reporters. The Browns coach, though, doesn't believe the injury is a serious one and expects him to play Friday.

Erving was hurt during shared drills with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, leaving backup Garth Gerhart to work with the first-team offense and Mike Matthews to toil with the twos and threes.

The Browns can hardly afford injuries upfront. While Erving has been a comprehensive mixed bag, the hope in Cleveland is that the 2015 first-rounder will emerge as a capable replacement for Pro Bowler Alex Mack, who signed with the Falcons this offseason.

Browns rookie wideout Corey Coleman, meanwhile, told reporters he's no longer experiencing hamstring issues and will be ready to play Friday.

Other injuries we're monitoring on this mostly glorious Wednesday:

  1. Trevor Siemian returned to practice Wednesday and took about 80 percent of his typical workload, NFL Media's James Palmer reported. The Broncos quarterback, who is in the midst of a three-way battle for the starting role, has been battling a sore shoulder and did not throw on Tuesday. He's still expected to start his second straight preseason game on Saturday.

Siemian's presence at practice is a good sign for Gary Kubiak and the Denver faithful, as he has emerged as the clear favorite in-house to win the starting job. An average or above-par performance against the Rams would cement his position, but Siemian needs to stay out of the trainers' room.

  1. Now for some positive center news: The Times-Picayune's Larry Holder reported that Saints pivot Max Unger was back on the field today after leaving Tuesday's practice. He should be fine for Friday's meeting with the Steelers.
  1. Colin Kaepernick is on track to return to the sidelines this weekend. Saddled by arm soreness, the 49ers quarterback hasn't been on a "pitch count" in practice, but has been splitting first-team reps, coach Chip Kelly said Wednesday.
  1. ESPN's Jenna Laine reported that Bucs starting right guard Ali Marpet was in a walking boot Wednesday, while fellow guard J.R. Sweezy (back) still hasn't been cleared to practice.
  1. Colts cornerback Vontae Davis told The Indianapolis Star's Zak Keefer that he's hopeful his ankle injury heals in time for him to be ready for Week 1.
  1. Eagles coach Doug Pederson told reporters offensive lineman Isaac Seumalo has a strained pectoral muscle and won't play Saturday. Quarterback Carson Wentz (ribs), as expected, will miss the game as well.
  1. Giants rookie cornerback Eli Apple says his injured knee is close to 100 percent healthy.
  1. The Bears welcomed back Jeremy Langford to practice on Wednesday. The running back was dealing with a left foot injury, and his return is a good sign for his status regarding Saturday's game.
  1. After returning earlier this week from a concussion, Cardinals receiver John Brown was held out of practice Wednesday because of a headache, the Arizona Republic's Kent Somers reported. Fellow Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald also sat out of practice with a "minor" MCL issue.
  1. Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowskireturned to the field Wednesday after missing more than a week because of an undisclosed injury.
  1. Jordan Matthews hasn't played yet in the preseason, but the Eagles wideout had some strong words about his status for Week 1 of the regular season.

"I promise you I'll be ready for the first game," Matthews told philly.com.
