Jets interviewing Ron Rivera for vacant head coaching job

The New York Jets will kickstart their head coaching interviews with a seasoned voice.

The Jets are scheduled to interview Ron Rivera for their head coaching job this week, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported Monday, per sources informed of the situation.

Rivera has 13 years of head coaching experience with Carolina (nine years) and Washington (four seasons), where he compiled a 102-103-2 record. The Commanders fired Rivera in January 2024 after a fourth consecutive season without a winning record and one playoff appearance.

Rivera currently works as an analyst for NFL Network.

Current NFL assistant coaches cannot interview until after the regular season ends -- with the initial round only being virtual. There are no such restrictions on potential hires like Rivera, who is not tethered to a club.

Rivera owns a wealth of experience, having coached in over 200 games and generating five postseason appearances, including helping the Panthers get to Super Bowl 50 (loss to Denver).

The 62-year-old is expected to be the first of many coaching interviews as Gang Green plans to spread a wide net in their search for a new coach in 2025.

New York has conducted several interviews for their open general manager gig but has not spoken to any candidates for their coaching position since firing Robert Saleh five games into the season. Interim coach Jeff Ulbrich is 2-9 since taking over the Jets. New York hasn't had a coach finish his tenure with a winning record since Al Groh left for Virginia after one season, going 9-7 in 2000.
