Mississippi State QB Dak Prescott visiting Denver Broncos

With trade talks regarding 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick at a potential impasse, the Broncos are taking a closer look at a QB prospect in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Former Mississippi State signal-caller Dak Prescott is traveling to Denver on Tuesday for a visit with the club, according to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport. Although Prescott is weeks beyond his pro-day workout, he was in Orlando last week to continue his training with private quarterback coach Tom Shaw in an effort to stay sharp for pending private workouts with other NFL clubs.

Denver has been negotiating with the 49ers on a potential trade to acquire Kaepernick, but those talked had stalled as of Monday. The 49ers hold the No. 7 overall pick of the draft and are believed to be considering a first-round quarterback. They're also the team most likely to trade up with the Tennessee Titans for the No. 1 overall pick, according to NFL Media analysts Daniel Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks.

Denver's quarterback situation isn't much clearer.

Between the retirement of Peyton Manning and the free-agency loss of Brock Osweiler to the Houston Texans, veteran Mark Sanchez and 2015 seventh-round pick Trevor Siemian are the only QBs on their roster. All seven NFL Media mock drafts project Denver to select Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch with the No. 31 overall pick of the first round. If they don't, Prescott could be an option later in the draft. Denver has three choices on the second day (Rounds 2-3) of the draft, where Prescott is most often projected to be selected, with the Nos. 63, 94 and 98 overall picks.

Prescott was selected MVP of the Reese's Senior Bowl in January and also competed at the NFL Scouting Combine before throwing at Mississippi State's pro day workout on March 10.
