The Browns announced Saturday they have terminated the contract of Donte Whitner. The strong safety played two seasons in Cleveland, and becomes the seventh starter to depart from the team this offseason.
"It is important for us to thank Donte for all of his contributions to the Cleveland Browns over the last two seasons," Browns executive vice president of football operations Sashi Brown said in a statement. "His passion for this city and dedication to his craft was contagious. These are difficult decisions to make but we felt it was the best decision for the Browns at this time. We wish him the best as he continues his career."
Whitner, a Cleveland native, was second on the team in tackles last season and earned a Pro Bowl trip in 2014. The 30-year-old took to Twitter after receiving word of his release.
The Browns have now cut ties with both of their leading tacklers from 2015 -- inside linebacker Karlos Dansby was also let go. Offensive tackle Mitchell Schwartz, wide receiver Travis Benjamin, inside linebacker Craig Robertson, center Alex Mack and safety Tashaun Gipson all left in free agency.
In other Browns news, the team released cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, a seventh-round pick last year who is attempting to come back from a serious knee injury suffered before his final college game with Oregon.
