NFL roundup: Latest league news from Monday, May 2

Mike Davis' return home lasted just one season.

The veteran running back announced his release from the Atlanta Falcons on Monday with a tweet of appreciation.

Davis joined a Falcons squad in need of offensive talent in 2021 in a move that also returned him to his native Atlanta. He received 138 carries, gaining just 3.6 yards per carry in an offense that ended up deploying running back Cordarrelle Patterson as a do-everything playmaker and diverting targets to rookie tight end Kyle Pitts.

Davis didn't see as much action as he might have expected, finishing with fewer carries than in his final season in Carolina. He'll hit the open market at 29 years old after the draft with the hope he'll be able to land on a roster with a chance to compete for a spot this summer.

In other Falcons roster news, Atlanta will be picking up the fifth-year option for guard Chris Lindstrom, NFL Network's Mike Giardi reported Monday. The team later confirmed the news, along with the news that they had declined the fifth-year option for offensive lineman Kaleb McGary. The Falcons also announced that they had released linebacker James Vaughters and offensive lineman Willie Beavers, and placed long snapper Beau Brinkley on injured reserve.

Roster moves

  • The Arizona Cardinals announced Monday that they had re-signed safety Charles Washington to a one-year contract. Washington has played the last three seasons with the Cardinals.
  • Linebacker Justin Houston received an unrestricted free-agent tender from the Baltimore Ravens on Monday and remains eligible to sign with any team. The Ravens will receive exclusive negotiating rights for Houston if he does not sign by July 22, 2022 or the first scheduled day of the first training camp practice -- whichever comes later. If Houston signs a deal with a new team on or before the date, he would classify as a potential compensatory free agent lost by his prior team and therefore a potential CFA gained by a new team if all other requirements are met under the compensatory draft system's rules.
  • The Carolina Panthers agreed to terms with returner Andre Roberts on a one-year contract.
  • The Cincinnati Bengals announced the re-signing of punter Kevin Huber to a one-year contract.
  • The Cleveland Browns have released kickers Chris Blewitt and Chase McLaughlin. The move comes days after the Browns selected former LSU kicker Cade York in the fourth round of the NFL draft. The Browns also announced that they had signed Marcus Santos-Silva, a former basketball player for Texas Tech, to play tight end.
  • The Houston Texans are picking up the fifth-year option for versatile offensive lineman Tytus Howard, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday. The Texans are signing former Seahawks defensive end Rasheem Green to a one-year contract, per Rapoport. Green logged 6.5 sacks in 16 starts with Seattle in 2021.
  • The Jacksonville Jaguars announced the addition of 15 undrafted free agents and the release of offensive lineman Brandon Murphy and linebacker Elijah Sullivan.
  • The Kansas City Chiefs are signing undrafted Clemson wide receiver Justyn Ross, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported, per a source. Following a breakout freshman season, Ross appeared to be a future first-round draft pick in the NFL but multiple injuries held him off the field since 2020. The 22-year-old first had a congenital fusion of his upper cervical spine and then a surgical fusion on his neck. Ross' return in 2021 ended after a stress fracture in his left foot required surgery. Rapoport reported on NFL NOW that many teams took Ross off their draft boards because the risk was real.

Defensive lineman Melvin Ingram received an unrestricted free-agent tender from the Chiefs on Monday and remains eligible to sign with any team. The Chiefs will receive exclusive negotiating rights for Ingram if he does not sign by July 22, 2022 or the first scheduled day of the first training camp practice -- whichever comes later. If Ingram signs a deal with a new team on or before the date, he would classify as a potential compensatory free agent lost by his prior team and therefore a potential CFA gained by a new team if all other requirements are met under the compensatory draft system's rules.

  • The Los Angeles Chargers are declining the fifth-year option for defensive lineman Jerry Tillery, per Rapoport. According to Rapoport, sources say Tillery is still in the Chargers' long-term plans as he comes off the most productive year of his career, collecting 51 tackles and 4.5 sacks.
  • The Minnesota Vikings have signed running back Jake Nargas, the team announced Monday.
  • The New Orleans Saints are expected to sign Tyrann Mathieu, Rapoport reported Monday, per a source. The signing should be finalized in the coming days, according to Rapoport.
  • The Philadelphia Eagles agreed to release offensive lineman Nate Herbig, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported, per Herbig's agent. Herbig had signed his RFA tender last week, and will now be an unrestricted free agent.
  • The Pittsburgh Steelers are declining the fifth-year option on LB Devin Bush, Rapoport reported Monday.
  • The San Francisco 49ers re-signed veteran cornerback Jason Verrett to a one-year contract.
  • The Tennessee Titans waived tight end Austin Fort and linebackers Nate Hall, Kobe Jones, and Tuzar Skipper on Monday, the team announced.
  • The Washington Commanders are signing veteran guard Trai Turner, per Pelissero. It is a one-year deal worth $3 million, per Rapoport, per a source.

Trades

  • The Houston Texans have traded cornerback Lonnie Johnson to the Chiefs, Pelissero reported. The team later confirmed the trade. The deal will send a 2024 conditional seventh round pick to the Texans, Rapoport reported, per a source.
