Jason Hill is stepping up in San Francisco: After Hill caught 30 passes for 317 yards and two touchdowns in the 49ers' last nine games of 2008, the team is expecting the third-year wide receiver to take a step forward this season. He showed signs of that Friday, catching two passes for 33 yards, including San Francisco's only touchdown on a 21-yard throw from rookie QB Nate Davis in the second quarter.
Gartrell Johnson could beat out a veteran in San Diego: The rookie made a strong case for a roster spot, gaining 85 yards on 20 carries and adding a 16-yard reception. That, plus a 3.8 yards-per-carry average in the preseason, should be enough to propel Johnson past nine-year pro Michael Bennett, whose 89 rushing yards in four games likely won't be enough for him to make the Chargers' 53-man roster.
