Caleb Williams, Bears prepare for 'mental war' against DC Brian Flores, Vikings

Fresh off a fantastic season debut and a 59-point explosion, the Chicago Bears return home to host the Minnesota Vikings.

The challenge ahead includes countering one of the NFL's most aggressive and exotic defenses, directed by coordinator Brian Flores.

In simple terms, it's an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object. From Bears coach Ben Johnson's perspective, it's more of a war of attrition, with the opposition targeting a key resource: emotion.

"Coach [Ben Johnson] calls this 'mental war' when you go against versus him, and that's what it is," Bears quarterback Caleb Williams said Wednesday, via ESPN. "You've got to be able to go out there and bad things are going to happen. You've got to be able to fight back and stay steady. That's one of the biggest things is not allowing his defense and all of that to fluster you and get in your mind. You stay steady and now it's time to go make plays and get completions, and when the big ones show up, take them and find them."

Williams certainly took plenty of the big plays in Week 1. Chicago piled up 552 yards of offense, Williams completed 21 of 29 passes for 269 yards and two touchdowns, and added two more rushing scores of his own, including a dazzling 29-yard sprint to the end zone just before halftime. For one week, everything worked.

Chicago knows the going won't be that easy against Minnesota. The Vikings delivered their own avalanche of sorts on Sunday, but on the defensive side of the ball, sending a flurry of blitzes at Packers quarterback Jordan Love that powered a 22-point fourth quarter and a 17-point win in a game that had previously appeared destined to end in defeat.

In one half, Flores' defense reminded the rest of the NFL of its strengths. The two clash Sunday in a contest that will test the Bears' preparation and ability to adjust quickly.

"You don't," Johnson said with a laugh when asked Wednesday how he can predict how Flores might approach the game. "You try to have answers for everything. He's been in this division three years now, and yeah, I mean you'd like to think he's put everything he could possibly do on tape until you play him next and you realize he hasn't yet. So it'll be something new. There always is with him, and that's what makes him such a good coordinator.

"It's a great challenge. It really is. You have a lot of fun on game day. Now the week of preparation is not so much fun, but you know, there's a lot of back and forth that goes into it."

With only one week complete, there's plenty left to discover in this new NFL season. Johnson hasn't been shy about his record-breaking goals for his offense in 2026, and after one week, it seems the Bears are on track to accomplish them.

"Scoring every drive is our mindset," Williams said. "That's the potential of us. That's an internal expectation, that's an internal feeling just of what we have up front, out wide and in the backfield. It's an expectation from ourselves to be able to go out there and score every time and figure out ways to help the defense. That's our part to help this team, help special teams, is scoring points, as many as we can, on as many drives that we have. That's our challenge."

We'll learn whether that's still realistic after these two heavyweights collide Sunday.
