Cardinals HC Jonathan Gannon questioned about job status after 3-7 start: 'Not controllable for me'

The Arizona Cardinals' 2025 season has been a roller-coaster, highlighted by steep downward plunges.

A 2-0 start to the campaign was followed by five one-score losses heading into a Week 8 bye. An impressive Week 9 prime-time pummeling of the Dallas Cowboys got things back on track. But, in reality, that was a minor upswing for an even sharper plummet.

The Cards have been shellacked in back-to-back games by division opponents, losing 44-22 to the Seahawks, then 41-22 to San Francisco on Sunday.

The out-of-control coaster ride has coach Jonathan Gannon answering questions about his job status in Year 3.

"Not controllable for me," Gannon said of "hot seat" rumors, via the Arizona Republic. "I didn't hire myself, I'm not going to fire myself. So seriously, I know it comes up. That's the business we're in. If you don't want to be in that business, we laugh, we joke, go work somewhere else. I'm going to control the controllables for myself. Come to work and do the best job that I can and try to get our team in a position to win a game."

After a 4-13 first season in Arizona, Gannon's club showed some fight, going 8-9 in 2024. The club expected to take a step forward in Year 3. That hasn't happened in any shape or form.

Injuries have played a role, first hindering what Gannon could do with his defensive scheme early. The running back room has been decimated. Kyler Murray's foot injury added issues. Jacoby Brissett has stabilized the QB position, but has far too little help.

It's a team whose roster remains wanting.

With Murray questions swirling heading into the offseason, the question is whether owner Michael Bidwill will decide to make a clean sweep, or give Gannon another ride, possibly with a new QB.

One positive for Gannon: His players haven't seemed to quit on him -- at least not yet.

"They want to be part of the solution as well," he said. "They come up and tell me that, and that's a good thing. I'd be lying to say it's cheerful in there (the locker room) right now."

At 3-7, the Cardinals are in the basement of the NFC West, and the only team below the seven-win mark in the division. They currently sit tied for the eighth-worst record in the NFL.
