The 2025 season will include a new evolution in fashion for the Los Angeles Chargers.
The team revealed a new uniform closet on Tuesday, including a new alternate gold jersey, the addition of powder blue pants and a reimagined alternate navy kit.
Dubbed "Charger Power," the all-gold uniform features the first yellow jersey in club history, a name which harkens back to the "Air Coryell" era in which coach Don Coryell pushed the game forward with his explosive, pass-happy offense. The all-gold look will be worn with the team's standard white helmet, which includes a matching gold facemask.
"You can see images of fans in the stands all wearing gold and all wearing 'Charger Power' T-shirts. It's a special moment in the franchise's history, for sure," Chargers president of business operations A.G. Spanos said, via the team's website. "We wanted to lean into that, and we think this was a fun way to do so."
The gold jersey first debuted as a retail-only item as part of Nike's "inverted" line, but was so popular among fans, the team decided to adopt them as a new third option. The jersey matches the gold pants the team first debuted as part of their revamped kits introduced in 2020.
"Nike had previously done a retail version of the 2020 jerseys in gold," Spanos said. "It sold quite well and had really good word of mouth. In fact, in my own household, it was my kids' favorite uniform. It definitely appeals to the younger demographic.
"Ultimately, it captured a lot of things we were looking to accomplish with an alternate uniform," Spanos added. "It was a nod to the past but still had a youthful energy. We're excited to have it in the closet."
The all-gold look will be a unique one in the NFL; the last notable all-gold uniform was the alternate Color Rush set worn by the Rams in their final year in St. Louis, which they took with them to Los Angeles last decade.
A new alternate gold jersey would have been enough to make headlines, but with the Chargers having donned three shades of blue throughout the course of their history -- which they incorporated into their options with their 2020 redesign -- Los Angeles didn't stop there. The Chargers also revealed a new all-navy uniform that will instantly take fans back to the era in which Rodney Harrison patrolled the secondary and LaDainian Tomlinson was just starting his Pro Football Hall of Fame career.
These new uniforms, dubbed "Super Chargers," look much like the old version. They include the white lightning bolts on the shoulder caps of the jerseys, outlined with a thin navy stripe and a gold outer border, just like they appeared in the late 1990s and early 2000s. A matching straight lightning bolt runs down the navy pants, while the Chargers' updated number font appears in white and is outlined in the same navy and gold stripes.
With the NFL relaxing helmet rules and opening the door for alternate shells, the Chargers have taken advantage of the possibilities by introducing a navy helmet that appears exactly as it did back then aside from the white numbers underneath the bolt.
There's no better time to introduce an updated version of these uniforms as an alternate than in 2025, the same year in which another Chargers hero of that era, tight end Antonio Gates, is enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this summer.
"I love the navy. That was my favorite one," Gates said. "And once I saw this new version, I said, 'Yeah, I definitely would have scored a few touchdowns wearing that.' I love that uniform. I wish I could play in it again."
The updated closet replaces the previous navy alternate with what is essentially a modern throwback, benches the team's royal alternate and replaces it with an all-gold look that will undoubtedly pop both in the daylight and under the lights of SoFi Stadium.
The Chargers will debut the navy uniform with their Week 8 Thursday night game against the Minnesota Vikings, the same night in which they'll induct Harrison into the team's Hall of Fame. They'll also wear the new look for their AFC West showdown with the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 13.
As for the gold, the Chargers will drench their fans in sunshine when they host the Indianapolis Colts in Week 7.
