Washington Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu is eligible to play Sunday against the Detroit Lions after his one-game suspension was reduced to a $100,000 fine upon appeal, the NFL announced Tuesday night.
Hearing officer Derrick Brooks oversaw Luvu's appeal.
On Monday, Luvu was issued a one-game suspension for repeated violations of playing rules intended to protect the health and safety of players. The transgressions stemmed from Luvu applying hip-drop tackles, with the latest coming on Sunday during the Commanders' loss to the Seattle Seahawks. The Week 9 game marked the third time this season Luvu has been sighted for a hip-drop infraction. Prior to that, Luvu was fined for Week 4 and Week 8 hip-drop tackles.
Luvu, 29, will now be fined again, but he will be able to take to the field. Had the suspension been upheld, Luvu would have also been docked a $508,333 game check.
The linebacker is currently in his eighth NFL season and second with Washington. In nine starts so far this season, Luvu has tallied 50 tackles, two sacks and four tackles for loss.
