Commanders promote assistant quarterbacks coach David Blough to offensive coordinator

Washington's new offensive coordinator is coming from within.

The Commanders are promoting assistant quarterbacks coach David Blough to offensive coordinator, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Friday afternoon.

The team officially announced the decision on Saturday.

Not too far removed from his playing days, this will be Blough's first time serving as a club's OC.

Blough, who joined the Commanders to assist with QBs in 2024 and has spent the past two seasons in his role, also enjoyed a cup of coffee as an NFL quarterback. Still just 30, he appeared in nine games (seven starts) from 2019-2022 with the Lions and Cardinals, going 0-7 with 1,435 yards, six touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Though he spent the 2023 season on Detroit's practice squad, his last meaningful time on the field took place in Arizona, where he played for Kliff Kingsbury -- then the Cards' head coach and Washington's OC above Blough in both of Dan Quinn's two seasons helming the Commanders.

Kingsbury and Washington agreeing to part ways has now provided Blough with a sterling opportunity -- and he was a coveted name, having also been a potential candidate for Detroit's OC position.

The Commanders offense struggled mightily in 2025, ranking 22nd in the league in both points and yards. The group was unable to find a certified threat on the ground, while stars Jayden Daniels and Terry McLaurin both missed extensive time due to injuries during a year that saw Washington's record flip from a promising 12-5 to 5-12.

Regardless, the Commanders still have Daniels, the 2024 AP Offensive Rookie of the Year, who boasts a sky high ceiling.

Washington is turning to Blough ensure Daniels reaches it, along with the rest of an offense hoping to power the Commanders back into contention after getting a taste just a season ago.
