Lions reportedly to cut Nate Freese, sign Alex Henery

It took Nate Freese just three weeks to lose his job.

The Detroit Lions reportedly plan to cut their starting kicker and sign former Philadelphia Eagles starter Alex Henery, the Detroit Free Press first reported.

Freese missed four field goals in three weeks, including a 41-yarder Sunday at Ford Field that ultimately sealed the seventh-round pick's fate.

The rookie kicker missed two first-half field goals on the road in a Week 2 loss to the Carolina Panthers that changed the complexion of the game.

The Eagles cut Henery in favor of undrafted free agent Cody Parkey this offseason. Henery was just 1 of 3 on field goals in the preseason and missed a crucial 48-yarder in a 26-24 playoff loss to the New Orleans Saints last season.

Henery doesn't have a strong leg, but Detroit is looking for a veteran with more consistency.

Henery was one of three kickers the Lions worked out last week, along with Rob Bironas, who died in a single-car crash late Saturday night, and Garrett Hartley.
