Sean McVay: Rams 'would love' to re-sign backup QB Jimmy Garoppolo

The Los Angeles Rams retained Matthew Stafford for at least another season. Sean McVay hopes to similarly keep his backup, Jimmy Garoppolo, in town.

"We would love to bring him back," McVay said Monday. "Obviously, have been very busy working through kinda the Matthew situation. That's the hope and anticipation.

"Now you guys know that there might be some other interest and Jimmy's earned the right to have that type of interest. But yes, if you said would I want Jimmy back here to be able to work in the quarterback room with Dave Ragone and Matthew and those guys, the answer is absolutely yes."

Of course, the ever-positive McVay was unlikely to say anything other than the club wants Jimmy G back. With Stetson Bennett the only other QB under contract, the Rams will want a veteran in the room, whether it's Garoppolo or another experienced slinger.

Garoppolo's situation underscores the meager market heading into free agency. Sam Darnold sits as the top option for QB-need clubs, with Justin Fields, Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston and Jacoby Brissett among those looking for gigs.

Garoppolo played in one game for L.A. last season, the mop-up Week 18 loss to Seattle when McVay rested the starters. It was a solid outing for the signal-caller, who completed 65.9 percent of 41 attempts for 334 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

Could Garoppolo parlay that performance into a gig where he might have a chance to start? Might he be this year's Darnold -- a former starter who played in one meaningless Week 18 loss, then wound up rejuvenating his career -- or McVay's latest Baker Mayfield?

Garoppolo could be a wild card in a weak QB market this season -- both free agency and draft. If nothing materializes, he could have a nice cushy job back in L.A.
