One of the most dependable and underrated members of the San Francisco 49ers' dynasty of the 1980s, tight end Brent Jones is getting his due.
Jones, a three-time Super Bowl winner and four-time Pro Bowler, will be the 33rd inductee into the San Francisco 49ers Hall of Fame, the team announced on Monday.
"Receiving the call from Jed (York) was incredibly emotional for me, something that I will remember forever," Jones said in a statement. "It is truly the greatest honor of my life to be alongside the legends that comprise the San Francisco 49ers Hall of Fame, one of the greatest franchises in all of professional sports. I want to sincerely thank my coaches and the teammates who poured into me and allowed me to be successful on and off the field."
Taken in the 1986 NFL Draft's fifth round by the Pittsburgh Steelers, Jones only played for the 49ers. Cut after his rookie season, Jones was a diamond in the rough who shined in Bill Walsh's West Coast offense, going to four straight Pro Bowls from 1992 through 1995.
From 1987 through 1997, the all-star tight end played in 143 games with 126 starts, recording 497 receptions for 5,195 yards and 33 touchdowns. He helped the 49ers to three Lombardi Trophies -- Super Bowl XXIII over the Cincinnati Bengals, Super Bowl XXIV over the Denver Broncos and Super Bowl XXIX over the San Diego Chargers.
In all, Jones, who starred at Santa Clara University and is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, played in 21 postseason games for San Francisco.
Upon his induction, Jones will reunite with a slew of former teammates -- 49ers and NFL all-time greats -- such as quarterbacks Joe Montana and Steve Young, running back Roger Craig, wide receivers Jerry Rice and John Taylor and safety Ronnie Lott.
