Tom Coughlin's 67th birthday just so happened to fall on the same day that NFL teams must whittle their rosters to 53 players -- a day that isn't the New York Giants coach's favorite of the year.

Teams had until 6 p.m. ET on Saturday to reduce their rosters to a maximum of 53 players. Who was cut?
On Saturday, the team announced it had terminated the contracts of running back Ryan Torain and quarterback David Carr.
Even with a recent injury to running back Andre Brown, Torian couldn't make the final cut. The Giants will begin the season with starter David Wilson, Brown, Da'Rel Scott and Michael Scott in their backfield. Torain showed promise in New York's offense, particularly in pass protection, but the injury-prone back couldn't avoid the ax.
Quarterback Curtis Painter (the one-time backup to Peyton Manning in Indianapolis) will be the primary backup to Eli Manning, with rookie Ryan Nassib slated to hold a clipboard as he continues to learn the Giants' offense. Carr had been a valuable asset to the QB room, but the team decided to go younger and cheaper.
The Giants also announced that wide receiver Ramses Barden was placed on season-ending injured reserve with a knee injury. Marvin Austin was the odd man out on the defensive line as the team declined to keep the third-year tackle.
