Justin Pugh, New York Giants strike rookie contract

The New York Giants officially are stronger up front.

Offensive lineman Justin Pugh has agreed to terms on his rookie contract, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported Thursday, citing a source who spoke with the player. Terms of the pact were undisclosed.

The 19th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft is preparing for training camp and should see plenty of first-team snaps as coach Tom Coughlin pieces together his offensive line.

Giants coordinator Kevin Gilbride confirmed this month that Pugh has an opportunity to wrest away the starting right tackle spot from David Diehl. Gilbride told ESPNNewYork.com, "There's no question, we needed an infusion of talent at that spot -- young talent to come in and assume starting roles. How soon that will be remains to be seen."

Pugh worked primarily at right tackle during offseason practices, but there's chatter about the rookie competing with Kevin Boothe for the left guard spot. Pugh has the advantage of joining a line that remains one of the league's best, especially when it comes to blasting holes for the run game.

No matter where Pugh winds up, he's a fan favorite around these parts for staging one of the greatest draft-day celebrations of all days.
